Guardrails one measure of many needed on Altrincham site

Guardrails

Suitable guardrails to ensure safe working at height may have been just one of many measures needed on an Altrincham building site.

According to a HSE report, a Cheshire builder was converting a shop on Kingsway into three apartments across three different floors.

In November 2013, the HSE were first alerted to potential safety risks relating to the possible release of asbestos during the work carried out.

But after inspecting the site, that was found to be just one of the problems – others included unsafe scaffolding, unsafe working at height,  unsafe electricity supply, a lack of welfare facilities and safety equipment, and fire safety failings.

It’s a lengthy list that demonstrates a comprehensive lack of awareness from the Cheshire builder involved – and which led to nearly £13,000 in fines and costs.

Guardrails are one relatively simple measure to protect people working at height, and can remain in place to ensure safe access to roof areas once the work is complete.

Other safety equipment, such as man anchors, can add a further layer of protection – one more reason why such substantial safety failings are inexcusable.
